cheering up friends

This was my week to cheer up some friends. First – one of the GOTR participants. She was really reluctant to participate, so much so that she refused to get out of the car for a practice a few weeks ago. This week’s challenge: to run 2 miles, then 3 miles. She met both goals and was so proud of herself. I passed her this card at dismissal yesterday. Her smile: priceless. And, I think I might have even made her a runner!

Next up, Angel. We checked her grades last Thursday, and they were not good 😦

Report cards went home on Tuesday and I was not sure if she was going to do HW club with us, so I got her a card and made a top 10 list of why Angel is AWESOME.

Angel is a great kid, but she is behind academically. We are working hard to get her caught up, but her attitude towards getting better is so important. When I read her the top 10 list she laughed, covered her face, but I know deep down she appreciated the praise. Now for one more positive: she moved up a reading level since starting in the HW club. As I told her, the only way to get better at reading is to practice reading!
