what a day….sigh

First, the really bad news. Smooch has another Urinary Tract Infection. I watched her squat to dribble out pee every 2 mins while I mowed the yard yesterday. I told myself that she was just marking the yard, but I think deep down I knew she had another UTI. That was confirmed when she peed massive amounts while in her crate (with no blankets so she was just sitting in it, completely miserable) for less than an hour during lunch time. I literally wanted to cry. I hoped so much that the surgery was our fix for this issue.

We went back to the vet today, and it was confirmed she has a recurrent UTI. 2 more weeks of antibiotics, but not much of a plan beyond that. Rahul and I have been doing our own research and plan to make some diet changes, along with adding some supplements. It surely cannot hurt at this point.

So for now, my sweet Smooch is sleeping outside.

Now, I know she is a dog, but she is a part of our family so for her to be banned to the outside feels mean. But, I have been cleaning up accidents for 6 months now. Yes folks, half of a year, and I am so done with all of this. I know it is not her fault, but this is all so much more than we planned for.

Hoping the 3rd time is the charm for antibiotic treatment.

Now for the other bizarre news of the day. Time Warner Cable contractors *finally* came out to bury the cable from the house to the workshop. Initially the TV did not work, but I am happy to report that I was able to troubleshoot with the remote (yes, I held it and operated it all by myself!)

After that, I needed my 2pm Starbucks Cool Lime Refresher. Think: more than double the caffeine of coffee…woo hoo!. I open my car door, and a 4 ft black snake shot out from underneath my car….right between my legs! It happened so fast, I did not even have time to react. I told Mr Black Snake (he has no name yet) that on Wild Azalea Lane, he is welcome under the following conditions:

1) do not scare me.

2) you must allow photographs

What would you do if this (not our resident black snake, courtesy of Google images) slithered between your legs as you were getting in your car?

Last, but not least in the day of bad news.

I picked up Samantha from school, rushed to get Aidan from his CFS carpool friend’s house, then back to the house to get Nooks for reading and Aidan’s guitar for guitar lesson. I made sure to pack up my lecture notes to work on my next power point during practice. We get to practice at 4:28pm (go mom!) and I realized my finger was bleeding. I got Aidan to practice and went back to the car to get a bandaid. Someone pulled into the spot *right* next to me, so I got distracted and tried to hurry up. As we were packing up at the end of the guitar lesson, I looked around for my car key. Sigh. I locked it in the car. This was not me in the picture, but how I felt in that moment.

Thankfully Rahul met us at guitar practice and the plan was to go out to dinner as a family. Oops. As usual, hot headed mom and dad did not do well with this change of plans. Peaceful Aidan helped us get thru this bump in this stressful day for both of us.

So, right now I am enjoying a large glass of wine and hoping tomorrow is a better day. One free of snakes, arguments and pet health issues!

First day at Carolina Friends

I got Samantha to her carpool drop off and picked up Aidan’s friend that we are taking to Carolina Friends and got both boys to school on time (go mom!) Even better, my stealthy back to school pic of Aidan.

Image

He had a great first day and declared Friends school “awesome!”

Tuesday is my day for afternoon carpool at Willow Oak. Check out this motley crew:

We have named them the Manns Chapel Rd carpool crew 🙂 They are a hoot.

At bedtime Samantha came downstairs to thank us for letting her go to Willow Oak this year. She loves it so much. That along with Aidan’s declaration of his school’s awesomeness makes me super happy with our school decisions this year!

First day at Willow Oak

Samantha started 3rd grade today. She has been really excited about going to a Montessori school, but she is my daughter so her worries started either last night or this morning. She does not know about Montessori learning, her 2 closest friends do, what if she does not know what to do, etc. I swear, both of us need off switches for our brains!
Here she was before school.

She had a great first day and is already excited about playing with some new manipulatives tomorrow. Her words: I had fun and think I learned things without really knowing it. Now THAT is how learning should be!

Happy birthday Aidan!

Note: I am writing this post the day before Aidan’s actual birthday because tomorrow starts the crazy, busy 2013-14 school year 🙂

It is hard to believe that 10 years ago in Pune, India this little guy was born.

We are so lucky to have this smart, handsome, ball of energy in our family!

Mema and Ppops came to celebrate this weekend. Today was lunch at Mint, followed by birthday cake. Here are some pics of Aidan’s special day.

The dog park solution

Now that Smooch is back home, we have been trying to decide what to do about dog socialization. She loves being around other dogs, but Rahul is no longer a fan of the dog park. If you missed that story, click here. Other people that are not fans of the dog park: the vet and our dog trainer. Not because of the dogs, but because of their owners. So, after much discussion we decided not to go back to the dog park.

I am proud to report that I came up with a solution that makes everyone happy….Companion Camp!

We took a tour today and signed up for Tuesdays. Smooch will hang out all day on Tuesdays in a safe environment with dog professionals supervising the play. This will also give me one uninterrupted day a week to work on lectures, grading assignments, etc. And, best of all….we will pick Smoochie up after the kids get home from school.

Win, win for everyone 🙂

the story of the birthday guitar

Aidan has fallen in love with the guitar this summer, so it was not surprising that he asked for an electric guitar for his birthday. I ordered him a nice Fender Sunburst and made the mistake of telling him that it was supposed to be delivered last week (any day between Tuesday and Friday). With no camps on the schedule, the poor kid stalked the UPS man daily, and each day nothing came. Then on Friday we got an email saying it was just being shipped and would arrive today. Poor Aidan was devastated.

But, today was the big day and we were all excited. We needed to run a few errands, so I called UPS to see if I could leave a note with my signature on the door. I was told yes, so we quickly did our errands only to return to a sticker on the door saying an adult over the age of 21 needed to be present to sign for the package. UGH!

I called UPS and the guy I spoke to was super nice. He said we could come in the morning before the actual warehouse was open and come to the employee entrance, and he would let me sign for the package there. Aidan was on board with this, resolved not to get his guitar for another day.

By now, it was time to head out to Samantha’s school open house. As we were getting in the car, a UPS truck started backing down our driveway. The driver (Robert) said he felt bad that he could not leave the package earlier and wanted to check back one last time before he headed home. I swear I could have kissed him!

We packed up Aidan’s guitar in the car and headed to open house. To say Aidan was a distracted mess at open house would be a gross understatement. And, Samantha was itching to get home as well because she earned some teen movie with her allowance money (totally have no idea what the movie is about, but she is watching it “in private” right now). It is rated PG, so how bad can it be?

Aidan unpacked everything after choking down his dinner and was immediately in love with his shiny new guitar. Imagine his disappointment when he realized there was no input cable included 😦

I was proud of him, though. He said it was no big deal and put the strap on and started playing.

Image

I promised him we would go to the Music Loft for an input cable first thing in the morning (after I write a nasty review for the guitar company).

Ultimately, Aidan has a guitar and wants to play. Win, win in my book. Hopefully he will make some real music tomorrow 🙂

Guess who is home???

Smoochie! She completed puppy camp and was ready to come back home. We met with the trainer for a little over an hour to help with the transition. Here is our homework:

1) House training. Smooch was in her own kennel during her camp time, so going in and out to potty was not an option. She did pee and poop in the back of her kennel, which is a good sign (she has a specific place that she wants to go that is away from where she plays and sleeps). But we will have to start over with house training. We would have had to start over even if she had been inside during camp, because she would have to relearn where to go here. With her surgery and loads of training, I am hoping this house training stint will be a quick one.

2) The cats. I am proud to report that Banjo walked right by Smooch at the back door and asked to go outside without even flinching. Smooch just sat and stared at Banjo and sat when I said “leave it!” That impulse to chase is real, though so we will need to keep at it until she knows 100% no cat chasing.  I did get this pic a few minutes ago. Definitely progress!

3) Poop eating. She did not eat poop at all while at camp. Woo hoo!!!!

There was a certain little lady who was very happy that Smooch is home. Guess who it is?

That girl loves her dog 🙂
