The weekend celebration

Rahul officially is a super dad after all that he did to make Aidan’s weekend celebration an official hit! Aidan asked in lieu of birthday pool party, he wanted a weekend sleepover (read 2 nights, not one) with his friend Sam and to ride along with his dad on test drive of a Porsche (the kid is obsessed with cars these days!)

Super dad made the weekend even better with a Friday night movie on the lawn at Southern Village….complete with soda and chips!

Saturday morning test drive….and Rahul came home with a Porsche pamphlet and salesman’s business card….sigh.

Bojangles tailgating for dinner then a Railhawks game (we all did this, even Mark and Cindy 🙂 )

The best part? Our weekend is not over yet…..Sunday and Monday pool fun after I do some serious weeding in the gardens. I have loved having green grass in August (due to another rainy summer) but when the grass grows, so do the weeds!

Even better? I am married to the best dad in the world. Our family is so lucky to have him. Once Sam is back living at his own house I want to talk to Aidan about this amazing weekend and how appreciative he should be to have a dad like Rahul.

the official celebration starts

I will not give away the weekend celebration, but today we celebrated Aidan’s official day of birth. How is it that my first baby is now 11 years old?

Since today was a half day at school, Sam came home with Aidan to celebrate.

They worked on Aidan’s Lego present with supervision from Samantha. Then we headed to Tyler’s for a dinner celebration.

Good times for sure. Happy b-day to my special little dude. I cannot imagine life without him.

school orientation

Last night was the back to school picnic at Carolina Friends school. Samantha instantly made friends with another new rising 4th year student. Aidan and Sam were, of course, inseparable 🙂

This morning Samantha had new student orientation at 9am. She and her new buddy explored the Lower School while Aidan chatted with his former teachers. I loved seeing him interacting with his former teachers in such a mature way!

Next we ventured to the new middle school building for Aidan’s orientation. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would be excited about middle school for my children, but I really am! Middle school for me meant school cliques, glasses, acne, and a retainer. I was so unsure of myself and insecure! To know that neither of my children will have that experience is such a relief. I have a lot to share about middle school because it is new…. here we go.

1) The student panel. Parents got to do a Q&A with a panel of 4th year middle school students (also known as 8th graders). They were given challenging questions and answered them so thoughtfully and eloquently. One parent asked if they could change one thing about middle school what would it be. The only thing that was mentioned was a longer break time….everything else they would not change at all. Wow.

2) Electives. So, the 1st years (also known as 5th graders) have their core classes in the morning. Think Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Cultural Expressions, and How Things Work – A Bilingual Approach (Science and Spanish combined…neat, huh?) Then for the last 3 periods of the day students rank 4 electives that they want to take. And these electives are so much more than just band and foreign language. There is dance, woodworking, music history, math for a cause….and so much more. I had fun going through the electives this afternoon with Aidan and helping him decide on his rankings.

3) Advisors and mentors. Aidan will have a teacher advisor that he meets with twice a week to make sure he is on top of work, homework, etc. In addition to that, he will have a 4th year student mentor to meet with to help navigate the new school environment. This relationship totally changes the dynamics between older and younger students. Instead of feeling superior to the younger students, the older students serve as positive role models and supporters of the younger students.

4) More on electives (thinking in the future for Samantha). Students can opt to take year round Spanish electives that build in difficulty level. She loved Spanish at her former school, so it is comforting to know that she can continue more intense learning in middle school.

So, to say my heart is happy when I think about the upcoming school year would be a gross understatement!

PS – Samantha was totally up for a school pic, but I was respectful of Aidan and the lack of coolness in having your mom take a pic of you in front of the new middle school building 😉

Back home

Yet another great beach week for our family. Cindy and Sam joined us yesterday for some fun in the sun. We maximized our beach time by checking out at 10am and spending a few hours on the beach before getting lunch at one of our favorite beach restaurants before heading home. Super sad that summer is officially over 😦

Samantha has had a Dr Who obsession this summer thanks to her friend Ila. I made her a Tardis sand castle 🙂

We had tuna steaks on the dinner menu, but some summer storms prevented that from happening. No worries, we headed to a local restaurant for some good eats. Then the sun was back out for some more fun on the beach!

beach fun

I left my laptop charger at home, so I have been trying to conserve my battery power until my replacement cord arrived via amazon.com today. Imagine my surprise when my Prime account delivered the “cable” that needed to be soldered in order to work. Ugh. The picture for the cord showed the actual plug in part or I would not have ordered it. Anyway…. I am posting on Aidan’s computer b/c he pushed his sister under water and lost all technology for the night…sigh.

Here are some pics from our after dinner walk tonight. More to come, I promise.

Let the celebrating begin!

We are heading to the beach for one last summer vacation tomorrow, but tonight we had an early birthday celebration for Aidan with Mema and P Pops (after they spent the day at Frankie’s Fun Park….which Samantha deemed the most fun place in the world).

It is hard to believe that my first baby is almost 11 years old….and heading to middle school in 2 weeks! Time flies when you are having fun, right?
