the semi colon project

I read about this project earlier this summer, and it touched me in a real way when I think of my mom and her struggle with life. Why the semi colon? A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.  What an amazing and important message.
My mom did not end her life by suicide like so many who suffer from depression do, but she stopped living many, many years ago. I wanted so badly for her to “move forward” in any way, but she was stuck deep in her depression and could not. I tried in various ways to help her…move to Chapel Hill to help with the kiddos, find a job that gets you out of the house, just come visit us on a holiday so you are not alone. It almost never worked. Her life was dictated by depression and that period had a powerful hold on her.

The project’s goal is to raise awareness for mental illness and erase the stigma that surrounds it. Readers are asked to draw or have a semi colon tattooed on their body to remind them not to stop but to keep going. Their life means something and is not over.

I am not ready for more ink at this point in my life, but I did get a semi colon sticker for the car. If just one person sees it and goes to the website, then that will make me happy. And, as I walk out to my car each and every day, I am also reminded not to stop and always keep moving forward.
