birds in our woods

I have been hearing a strange bird call lately in the woods of Wild Azalea Lane. I was finally able to snap a pic of her this morning. My first guess was Downy Woodpecker, but the call was not right. My next step was to ask my friend and birding expert, Andy Upshaw. This guy not only knows NC birds, but birds around the world. I shared a pic of a bird that hung out with us in Antigua, and he of course, knew how to identify it.

This lady is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. My picture is not that great, but check out the rows of holes on the tree. She has been working hard for that sap, huh?
