book #2

So my first book is in the final editing phases. I should get a final manuscript to review next week. What a process, but I feel like I am getting close to the final product.

Since work is going to be slow this week and next, I started working on book #2. I worked on the outline last December, so the ideas are there. I just need to fill in the details.

Wow, that makes it sound so easy. Haha. This book will be an activity book for tween age girls. Think a workbook that they can complete by themselves. Kind of like an interactive diary. I really like the idea, and the book publisher I am already working with wants to publish it. Now, before I get too excited, I am going to tell myself that regardless of how quickly I get the manuscript finished, not to plan on a publication date until 2019.

But there is an interest, and I love the idea. Win-Win. Now time to write!

Home and time to cleanse the body

We are home. Super fun trip, but feeling it today. Lots and lots of food. Good food, but so much of it. This after my return to the full time working world 6 mos ago where I developed some less than good food choices being busy and on the road without a lot of time to plan for meal choices.

But vacation is over, and I have a good feel for what my job requires in terms of scheduling, so it is time to get back on track… AND STAY THERE.

5 years ago I made a commitment to being healthy, and I did it. I got stronger and leaner.

I only lasted a year with healthy eating, but continued to strength train. Exercise has never been the problem. I am consistent about working out 3 times a week. And this summer I added in a weekly run with my best running friend.

But I am committed to getting back to a healthy eating place. My plan –

  1. Kick start with a month of breakfast and lunch shakes, coupled with good protein snacks.
  2. Paleo dinners.
  3. More water…. lots and lots of water. Even when I am on the road.
  4. Less alcohol.
  5. More steps. Goal: 10,000 a day.
  6. More work outs. Adding another day with my trainer.

I am starting tomorrow, which gives me exactly one month to assess this plan before my 44th birthday. Here’s hoping for good results!

Bloodline and the Keys

We learned on our visit to the Keys that the Netflix show Bloodline was filmed there. This is one of our favorite shows…. dark, dysfunctional, and super addictive. Season 3 is currently being filmed, as in the cast was in places we visited just last week!

Rahul was the first one to make the Bloodline connection when we ate at Morada Bay.

As he was snapping beach pics, he saw this house and thought it looked familiar. He asked the hostess to confirm. The Bloodline house!

I found this treasure while shopping at some local shops.

We got gas at Tom Thumb and had Christmas Eve dinner at Marker 88.

We got a swing table, like in the show. But our table was not the table where Danny’s dad confronted him and tried to pay him off to leave the Keys.

We have decided to re-watch seasons 1 & 2 now that we have visited so many of the filming spots. Unexpected fun on vacation.

snorkeling fun

So, this happened yesterday….

We found a family friendly company that would be nice to newbies. I had my underwater camera ready to go, but quickly learned that breathing would take some getting used to. Fun fact? Women are nose breathers and men are mouth breathers (generally speaking), so I had to remind myself to breathe every time I put my face in the water.

We saw some awesome fish, and Rahul used the camera provided by our captain, so I am hoping we get some good pics from that camera in a few days. To prove how bad my pics were, I have included this one.

The highlight of the trip was snorkeling around an abandoned boat. Our captain told us to dive down and check out the right hand side of the boat. Samantha and I were game.

Neither of us found anything…. thank goodness. Guess who lives there but was out hunting while we visited? A 5ft nurse shark!!! Harmless to us, but I am pretty sure I would have had a heart attack if I had seen him next to that boat.

Lots of beautiful birds and fun times with my family.

Girl Scouts fun!

Today was my last official day of work, but as Rahul reminds me daily after watching me work for the last 6 months… folks who work for Girl Scouts are ALWAYS working. He half jokingly says that unless he is on call, I hands down work more hours than he does each week.

But guess what? I love it. Ok, not all of it. There is adult drama, but I have learned how to be a good problem solver over the years… and I can even solve problems that should not be problems at all. Go me??

Today I got to do what I LOVE to do… reach and teach girls. I got to hang out with all the K, 1st, and 2nd grade girls at a local school in Moore Co. 50 girls per grade, which meant I took my helper Samantha who is already on holiday break.

We played how to be a good friend Hot Potato, but my favorite part of the mini lesson was the book reading of Stephanie’s Ponytail. It has such a great message… be true to who you are regardless of what people say about you. Here is Samantha a few years ago as Stephanie.

Today I selected a girl from each group to be Stephanie. And to my surprise, each group recited the repeating line unprompted – “it’s my ponytail, and I like it.”

For folks not familiar with the story, Stephanie wears her hair in different types of ponytails. Her friends laugh at her and call her ugly, but then copy her. I cannot think of a better way to teach girls to be true to themselves and not give in to peer pressure. A lot of girls mentioned that if someone makes fun of you, it means they are jealous. So true, but how to deal with that…. not so easy.

I also taught the girls the Girl Scout Promise and asked what they thought it meant to be a Girl Scout. Here are some of the comments –

  • help others
  • camp
  • sell cookies
  • hunt (hmm….)
  • have fun
  • earn badges
  • do crafts
  • be a good friend (hands down my favorite, of course)

What a great way to end my official work week. Feeling grateful for meaningful work, but also eager to unplug with the family for the holidays.

After unplugging, I am ready to get back at it. #investingirlschangetheworld

braces :-(

Samantha got braces this week. Because her bottom teeth are all in the wrong places, she needed top and bottom braces… and will have to wear them for 2 years.

She was miserable last night. Could not eat and in lots of pain. And of course she would not wear the mouth guard for her basketball game (they are not cool and no one wears them even though the orthodontist says to). Sigh.

I tried to be sympathetic, but it is not like we had a choice. This was not the conversation at our dinner table…. “you know, the orthodontist said Samantha really did not need braces but we could finance $5500 just to torture her for fun.” She was missing a bottom baby tooth, so her permanent teeth came in places they never should have been. Hopefully this pain is short lived, or until the first 6 week appt where they tighten the wire. Hormones and braces…. God help us.

For now, it is lots of Tylenol and soup…. and tears. Maybe she will be able to thank us when she has a perfect smile for high school…. we can only hope.
