life with a teen

So Aidan had a Dr check up last week and guess what? He is officially my height. I have tried to hide this for a few months by wearing 2 inch heels when around him. But when the nurse said he was 5’2” I literally gasped. My baby…. how is that possible?

Also these days when we stare at each other eye to eye, I have also noticed significant facial hair. The kid needs to shave, even his nurse and pediatrician commented on it.

Rahul and I both grew up in the 1980s. Parents didn’t talk about changing bodies back then. I remember distinctly getting a copy of Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret on my bed with a stickie note saying come to a parent with questions… which clearly meant DO NOT come to them with questions. Read the book and learn what you need to know.

Rahul remembers buying a razor around Aidan’s age, but that is it. He learned solo. As were the parenting strategies back in the olden days.

But this needs to happen soon at our house.

But in 2017, we talk and process everything. I LOVE that Aidan still comes to me to talk about things. So this is our next chat. How to shave.

Gulp. Wish me luck.

going out of my comfort zone

Today I had to do something super hard for me. My boss invited everyone on our team to a strange address with team building in the subject line. The first thing I did was Google the address and then the panic set in.

These types of social activities make me panic inside. They are so hard for me because my brain cannot stop thinking about all of the potential ways things can go badly. I am proud to report that I survived… 1 hr and 38 mins. And our team did not not “die” in the room.

But I have already booked my second massage for Friday. Backing up… last Friday I had my first massage since before children. I think Rahul gifted me that first massage in our early days of dating, but the therapist spent the entire time talking about how tense I was… which only made me MORE tense. My second chance at massage therapy was a hit. So I will add this into my self-care routine.

Taking care of yourself is so important…. as is knowing your triggers.

hydroponic garden

My birthday/anniversary present was hydroponic gardens. We settled on tomatoes and peppers, with a few herbs mixed in. Here are our gardens 30 days into the growth cycle.

I have never seen healthier plants. Super excited about the next phase. If the herbs are any indication, these veggies will be AMAZING.

Crazy, busy week

Wow. I have not posted in a while. Life has been crazy, busy these days. Aidan has finished winter sports, but Samantha still had one more week of games…. and play practices and rehearsals.

This was my Wednesday. Quick am grocery run for a crock pot dinner, hand washed basketball uniform, made it to my day long meeting in Raleigh on time… and wearing a skirt. Quick visit home to let dog out of crate and a Starbucks run before my World Thinking Day activities with Troop 997. Then to school pick up from after hours and play practice. Home for super tasty Indian stew. Now I am officially relaxing with a glass of wine and an episode of This Is Us.

Here is my favorite pic from World Thinking Day fun. For more on WTD, click here.

The girls were charged with watching a video from India and creating a dance together with the music. More fun at our next meeting on Feb 22nd.

Last weekend we made a family decision to allow a TV upstairs. Aidan was BEYOND excited. He has been restricted to playing video games in our den so far. But it was time to get that out of our living space. Of course there will still be rules and restrictions, but it was time.

Thursday was another long work day for me – home after 9pm. But the BIG game was on, so I stayed awake to watch the outcome. I saw this photo on Facebook and it made me laugh so hard.

Stupid DOOK won because the Tar Heels could not make free throws. Just sad.

Then Friday. The first showing of Peter Pan. Samantha is Smee, Captain Hook’s assistant. Here is Smee in cartoon form.

And here is Samantha as Smee.

This is the first showing. We all went to this one. Rahul will do the matinee tomorrow, I will do the evening show, and Samantha will do the after party and sleepover with her BFF (who also lives close to the school).

Aidan and  I have a hobby shop trip planned tomorrow and Sunday we have brunch to celebrate Rahul’s bday. For some reason, he is still 29. Not sure how that happened. We did get lunch together today…. Merritt’s BLTs. Good God, there is nothing better. This is Rahul’s double with avocado.

Whew, we need a vacation from work and life. I want a pause button on next week.
